Every player remembers the moment the game first captured their heart — the first save, the first goal, the first time they realized soccer was more than just a sport. For Albert Martin, that moment came early in life.
Albert grew up with limited financial resources, but what he lacked in money, he made up for in determination and raw talent as a young goalkeeper. He was passionate, hardworking, and driven to succeed. Still, like so many young athletes, the cost of playing at a higher level nearly stood in the way of his dreams.
Then something remarkable happened.
Teachers, coaches, and even his grammar school principal recognized his potential — and they stepped in. They helped make it possible for Albert to join an elite club team and opened doors that otherwise may have remained closed.
Because people believed in him and invested in his future, Albert went on to play soccer through college. But what stayed with him wasn't simply how far he went in the game. It was the impact those people had on the person he became.
They showed him what can happen when someone sees potential in a young athlete and chooses to invest in what's next.
Those mentors changed Albert's future — and he never forgot it.
For more than 30 years, Albert has worked with soccer players as a coach and goalkeeper trainer, helping athletes navigate both the challenges and opportunities that come with the game.
Over those years, one lesson became increasingly clear: developing a successful athlete requires more than developing soccer skills.
Young athletes are learning how to handle pressure, respond to setbacks, believe in themselves, work with others, lead, and discover who they are beyond a scoreboard.
Those lessons became the foundation for a bigger vision.
Next Goal Foundation exists to help soccer athletes build confidence, strengthen mindset, and develop character — qualities that influence not only how they compete, but how they approach life.
Through athlete resources, meaningful opportunities, community involvement, and giving back, Next Goal helps young people develop tools and experiences they can carry long after the final whistle.
Just as important, we want athletes to understand the power of doing for others what others once did for Albert.
An opportunity.
Encouragement.
Someone who believes in you.
A reason to keep going.
Soccer may be where the journey begins. It doesn't have to be where its impact ends.
Albert's story reminds us that one opportunity can influence the direction of a life.
Today, Next Goal Foundation carries that lesson forward by investing in athletes, encouraging them to invest in others, and using the game of soccer as a platform for growth, connection, and positive impact.
Because the next goal isn't always another win, another save, or another season.
Sometimes it's becoming more confident.
Sometimes it's learning how to respond when things don't go your way.
Sometimes it's leading someone else.
Sometimes it's giving another person the opportunity someone once gave you.
Every goal builds what's next.
